Founded in 1995, ISAPS is an association of scholars from many fields and countries, interested in the substantive study of global and local African concerns. Members bring training in philosophy, anthropology, the arts, economics, history, law, management, political science, psychology, sociology, history, as well as other related areas, to the study of African and Africana issues.

The Society for African Philosophy in North America (SAPINA) merged with ISAPS in January 2004.
ISAPS collaborates with the AfricaResource.Com (an educational portal for the development and dissemination of educational information on African and Africana issues).
